1. Judging others is something I struggle with a lot. I judge in my heart thinking that someone else's sin is worse than my own self-righteousness to judge them. However, Paul does present this portion of the book right after taking about the fallen world. I'm not saying that Christians should judge each other but if a Christian is living an unbiblical lifestyle, the church should call them out on it. Then we get into the "planks and specks" conversation. I'm definitely not the one to call out specks in eyes because of my many planks. But someone with clearer eyes than me please call out my faults and offenses. This wouldn't be judging me but guiding and helping me out of love, although I may not welcome criticism at the time. I think today many Christians including myself don't want to be reprimanded or told they're wrong and we then throw the term "don't judge!" out of context quickly. 2. V. 13-15 I find the little passage in the parentheses interesting. Whether or not someone has read the entire old Jewish law, we all have right and wrong written on our hearts. No one has any excuse against their own conscience. 3. The Jews had become self-righteous and thought they were better than the other nations because they had the law. In reality, they broke the law just as badly as the gentiles did. Your blood has nothing to do with the way God sees your sin. If we want to honor God and be righteous in His eyes, we just need to simply obey Him.
Verse 7- we need to seek everything good in our lives. Glory and honor are mentioned in the verse. If we set our minds on these things we will shine like a light to everyone around during the day. If we set our eyes on things of the world during the day we are bound to fall. Put your head up and seek The Lord always! Verse 13- be doers of the word and not hearers. I have a hard time with applying the Bible and what it commands to my life. I go to church and get motivated and then I walk out the doors and never apply the lesson. Lord please help me to be a doer of your word so others will see your light in me! Verse 21- we as Christians have no room to talk most of the time. We see the worldly people in our lives everyday and 'judge' them for something they have done and we turn right around and do the same thing. They're sin may seem bigger than our sins, and in our minds we might put ourselves above them but in Gods eyes all sin is sin. We need to evaluate ourselves before we feel the need to judge other people for what they have done.
V1-2) I honestly wasn't looking forward to reading Romans because it's more of a "dark" book compared to a book like James and the Corinthians. Chase, I gotta say thank you. The first two verses touched me. "Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things." I realize how often I walk by someone and instantly judge them. I think I'm not as "bad" or "dumb" or I judge their situation in life. I have no right to do that. I am no better than the person I am judging or than a criminal. We have all committed sins against God; this makes us all enemies of God. God is so great that He could save a sinner like me. The only thing that separates me from a murderer is that I have everlasting life. We do not have any reason to judge anyone, because we ourselves are far from perfect and have committed every sin. V12-13) "For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. " It is not enough for us to saved, and then go sit around and not do anything. We have been saved and must show it in everything I do. How often I fail at this on a daily basis. At the end of the day, I realize "I could have handled that differently" or " I shouldn't have been thinking that." It is just a personal reminder to me that just because I am saved doesn't mean I can't act like it. I must show God through everything I do. I am called to be set apart from the world, and one day I can do that is handle every situation differently. With love, compassion, joy and willingness. Not anger, spite and maliciousness. V11) "For God shows no partiality." This verse really hit it home for me. God judges us the same. The difference is that unbelievers will go to Hell, and the believers will go to Heaven. If you truly love something, you want to show it off to the world. You want to brag about it and be proud of it. That's how it should be in my Christian life.
Instead of particular verses, two things stood out to me: Hypocrisy and Judging They go hand in hand in my own life. I hold myself to a high standard, but I'm willing to give myself a break. Why, then, am I not willing to give others a break many times? Who do I think I am? Shall not the JUDGE OF ALL THE EARTH DO RIGHT? I should be more concerned about pleasing the Lord, then what other people are doing.
V1-2 This instantly reminded me of the saying "When you point fingers at somebody, for are pointing back at you." Being humans in a fallen world, we have no right to judge one another, because we are all sinners. We all sin, and we can't deny it. Only by God's grace can we be cleansed from our wickedness. Because of this, is actually kinda silly and pointless when you think about it, to accuse one another of sinning. However, since God is perfect and holy and just, he does have the power to accuse us, and he is right when he does. V6 This is sort-of like a promise warning, if that makes any sense. It tells us that God will judge us for what we do. And there's no escaping that. He is an omniscient, omnipotent God. We can't escape him (Jonah's story proved that). But instead of letting this scare us, we should use it as a reminder, so in a situation where we are tempted to sin, we can remember that God will judge us for our decision, and use that to help us make the right choice. V11 This is just really straightforward. God really doesn't care who you are or what you're status is. When it comes judgment day, all that will matter is your relationship with him and what you did for him in your lifetime. Money, status, popularity, that won't matter to him. This reminds me of that song "Oh you can't get to heaven..." that you might have sang as a kid in Sunday school, and you would stung that and put silly things like "...in your old blue jeans" at the end. As funny as we thought it was, there is biblical truth to that right here. So basically, all that really matters in this lifetime is our relationship with Christ and what we've done for him. Nothing else matters a lick.
1. V.1 I realize I hate it when people judge others and Itry my hardest not tto but I do anyways.... this verse really showed me that I need to be better about that 2. V.3 I often fins myself being a hypocrit. Someone will do something and I'll go on about how I don't agree with it, and then I'll catch myself doing the same thing. Again this verse showed me how to strengthen my character 3. V.2 but we always have to remember that God is the only judge. And he does it fairly.
1. V. 4 "the goodness of God leads you to repentance." It doesn't say the judgement of others. Let's let God be the judge. We should just strive to show God's goodness... 2. V. 21 live what you preach. Being one who is seeking to be a preacher, this hits hard. Just the from the little experience I have had, I have already failed so much. Thank God I'm not in this alone. Thankful for His grace in forgiveness 3. V. 23 I will boast in the cross alone. There is no reason to boast in the law or "how good we are". That doesn't change our standing with God. Only what Jesus did on the cross does. I'm not going to boast in the law rather the fulfiller of the law
1. vs.1: "Thou art inexcusable, O man". Too many times I judge people or situations before taking the time to really understand them. I'll judge people on things that I myself do repeatedly. It's weird how ignorant I can be about my own flaws and hypocrisies. I am not innocent of anything.
2. vs.8: I looked up the word "contentious" and found it to mean "fond of strife." So the verse literally means "those that are fond of strife and don't obey the truth...tribulation (anguish) and anguish (distress) upon every soul.." I don't know about you but that's terrifying to me. Who would want to be fond of strife anyways??
3. vs.21: I want to be a teacher. How can I teach a subject that I don't know and practice myself? Same applies to this verse and to the Christian life. Like Chase said, I've failed a lot and I know I will continue to. I need to lean on God daily to help me live and teach the life He would want me to live.
1. V 7 A reminder that being constant in well-doing is worth is in the long run. I may seem worthless to treat others right continually or have a daily devotion. But it's worth it eternally. 2. V 4 Sometimes I look at others and I question why God is so good to them even though they live such a crazy life. Here it points out that God's goodness will bring them to repentance. I'm not going to help them by seeking revenge or judging them. But rather by killing them with kindness. 3. Towards the end of the chapter I notice a theme of hypocrisy. Teaching/preaching one thing, yet living a different way. I know right here it's talking about preaching/teaching...but even with the things we say we can be so hypocritical.
