Since I've spoken a whole message on this chapter I'll just post some of my favorite points.
1. V. 13 This is one of my favorite verses and one that's been so powerful as I try to apply it to my life. Christ has called me unto liberty. I am free from the dictatorship of the law and from the chains of my flesh. But so often I use this freedom to do whatever I want to do, whether it be to sin or follow my own will. I mean why not have fun and do what I want? I can just ask forgiveness and God will still love me, right? That's abusing the liberty I've been given and using my wonderful freedom to feed my flesh. What an adulterous way to live a Christian life. But the verse says instead to serve one-another out of love for God. That's why I want to live righteously and serve! Out of true love for the one who first loved me. 2. V. 16-17 My life is a constant battle between the spirit of God in me and my old flesh. Every decision I make our action I take is a result of one of these two persons inside me. When I listen to my flesh, I will ultimately reap the terrible things in verses 19-21. If I WALK IN THE SPIRIT though, my life will be full of joy, peace, agape love, and so much else! Sometimes fighting the flesh can be difficult but in the end, walking in the spirit is the only way to have a happy life. 3. V. 24 Another favorite verse. Here's the picture. Flesh used to be on the thrown in my life. I had to obey everything it commanded. But when Christ came in, he dethroned my flesh, hung it on a cross, and became ruler Himself. How amazing is that! I have utter victory forever against the old man. But I still have a choice. Am I going to listen to the King or the criminal hanging on the cross? The flesh is dying and defeated but isn't dead yet. He will be with me until this body dies. God, help me obey the King, not the criminal.
v1: It's so reassuring to know that the bondage of sin has been broken forever. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is also Liberty." Even though Christ has set me free, it's easy to fall back into old habits and temptations if my walk with Christ is not maintained; However, by walking close with the Spirit and meditating on the fact that he has set us free, I don't think the pleasures of sin will appeal to us as much as they used to.
v13: I've heard people say before, "If God will always forgive me, then I can do whatever I want." This verse pretty much sets that philosophy straight. Just because Christ has given us Liberty and freedom does not mean we're allowed to use His love as a free pass to fulfill our flesh. This is abusing our undeserved Christian Liberty.
v19-21: After reading the long list of fleshly desires, it makes me even more thankful that I'm no longer in bondage to my flesh. Even though being a Christian does not mean you aren't susceptible to sin, it's amazing to think I won't be forced to pay the penalty for what God deems as wicked.
V7: Who hindered you? Why aren't you following the truth? These are pointed questions that are good for me to consider. Have I allowed people into my life that hinder me spiritually? How could a relationship be more important than following the truth?
V16 Walk in the spirit! Therein lies the power to not give in to sin!
V26: Don't crave attention. Don't provoke one another. Don't envy each other. I need these on post its all over my house and car!
1. V16 When you walk in the Spirit, you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh. Victory is possible, but walking in the flesh won't get you there. Each day I have a choice, walk(live life) in the Spirit of the flesh. I remember a few years back when the galkins were at our church, the guy spoke on this chapter. He said to walk in the Spirit is to "mimic Christ". 2. V17 It's a war. And its real. Two reactions, two responses both tugging you in opposite directions. The Spirit tells you to love and forgive, while the flesh tells you to get revenge and make them pay. Dying to the flesh can be so hard, but in order to live a victorious christian life its necessary. 3.19-25 The difference between the flesh and the Spirit is seen in these verses. There is fruit produced by both, what kind is determined by which one we walk in. I want the Spirit to control my action.s
Galatians 5 1. V. 1 We have liberty from sin not liberty to sin. So often people flip this concept to justify their actions 2. 13 We have been set free from the law but here it tells us to still abide by the principles. The liberty from the law should not cause us to be self centered. Rather, even though we no longer "have to", we should serve each other out of love. 3. V. 16 Very simple counsel...yet it is hard to apply. We don't have to focus on not doing what the flesh wants. Instead we submit to the spirit and walk in line with him and he will give us a new set of desires.
Vs. 13: We are not to use our Salvation as an excuse to Sin against God. There are to be no thoughts or statements such as this: "Well since I'm saved, God has forgiven me...so it doesn't matter if I sin."
Vs. 16-21: These verses state the sins that people commit when they are not walking in the Spirit. But God can deliver us from those sins!
Vs. 22-23: These two verses state the fruit that you will see in a Believers life when they are walking according to the Spirit. Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, etc...But they don't all appear at once! It takes time and effort to bear fruit!
