Colossians 3 1. V. 2 "Set your affection on things above, not on the things of this earth." God wants us to care about the eternal and spiritual things. The body and material things won't last but the spiritual will. Ironic how we care so much about the stuff that's just going to turn into ashes but hardly give a flip about the things that really matter. 2. V. 5 God tells us to mortify the deeds of the flesh. That's a pretty strong word. He wants us to be actively killing our flesh. When we aren't purposing to mortify the deeds of the flesh, they are creeping in. There is no time to break from our guard. We need to stay alert and fighting 3. V. 13 "forbearing one another, and forgiving one another". This ties in with putting others above self. We have to realize everyone fails, sins, and disappoints. Yet we are to forbear one another. And we are to forgive as Christ forgave...no strings attached.
Okay, I'm kinda mad cause the page just crashed and everything I typed got deleted and I was finishing my third verse, so this is just a very brief summary of what I had wrote. Ugh. V1 We are called to try and be like Christ, and forget the things of this world. He's what we should be focusing on. V3 God lets us wake up in the morning and gives us the breath we breath, not to mention he created us. He's all that really matters, so why should temporary earthly things disrupt our walk with him? V24 Though this should not be our motive, if we serve Christ and do things for him and not ourselves, or make sacrifices for him, he will reward us greatly in heaven. That's the best inheritance we could ever have.
1. v 5-15 It's like God is using the writer to say "don't live a life of sin, anger or malice. Watch what comes out of your mouth...that it's not blasphemy or filthy. All those things that you used to do, leave those behind. Actually completely dissociate with that lifestyle. you not the same person anymore, live a changed life. Patience, kindness, and humility should now control your actions. Replace anger with peace and hate with love.Stop following the world and start mimicking Christ. 2. v 16-17 Read the word, encouraging others, and live all out for Christ. 3. v 23 This verse makes me think of all the simple and annoying things I do each day. i def. wouldn't say I do them "heartily "with all my heart for Christ". But I can't deny it, God has given me certain responsibilities to do right now in my life. It's my job to follow through with this verse and do them to the best of my ability for him.
V5: Idolatry is covetousness. Ouch. The Bible tells it like it is. Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. If I hate someone, I'm a murderer. If I lust after someone, I'm an adulterer.
Vs8: Put off: anger, wrath, malice (these 3 are redundant) blasphemy, filthy language. Vs 12: Put on: tender mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience.
V21: I'm working on not provoking my children to wrath, so I'm substituting mothers here.
