1. V Because we have been saved we are no longer the same person. We are to "put on the new man" and live in a different way. 2. V 25-27 "putting on the new man" affects how we live and interact with others. Lying, anger, and bitterness(just to name a few) shouldn't make up who we are anymore. 3. V 29 I say a lot of things. But looking back over the things I've said even in the last week is pretty convicting after reading these verses. "let no corrupt communication proceed out of the thy mouth", "that which is good to the use of edifying", "minister grace unto the hearers". This give me some good goals/standards concerning the things I say. This is definitely something I need to work on with God's help.
V1-3: Walk worthy. Be humble. Be patient. Let love help you overlook offenses. Strive for unity. Love this advice!
V14: In our spiritually confused world, with so many ministers, many of whom are not true ministers of the gospel, we have to be on our guard! We can't be immature and flighty. Sometimes what these false teachers say sounds so good. But it doesn't line up with Scripture, so we must reject it.
V25,28,29: I love how all of these "put offs" are followed by "put ons." We can't expect ourselves or anyone else to throw out all that is worldliness without having healthy, God honoring replacements. Have fun. Laugh and enjoy what God has given you. Remove the sin and replace with a positive choice.
v 22 & 29: No corrupt communication. Sometimes we have a small view of what "corrupt communication" is. It's not just inappropriate language, but anything that displeases or grieves the Lord. Gossip, lying, etc. I know this is an area of my life that I constantly have to keep check on. It's so easy to get caught up in the filth of the world and talk about things that God condemns. If what I'm about to say is questionable, I need to stop and ask myself: Is it edifying? Does it minister grace and point back to Christ?
v 27: "Neither give place to the devil." I read in one of my devotions once, "What have you done to make the devil happy today?" That was so eye opening. I don't want to live my life giving joy to the devil; However, each time I sin I am giving way to him. Like verse 24 also says, we're supposed to put off the old man. Christ crucified the old man at the cross that way we would not have to please the devil.
v 32: How could one claim to be a follower of Christ but not be forgiving? Christians should know, more than anyone, the true importance of forgiveness. Who are we to expect forgiveness if we are not willing to forgive?
1. v. 1 God has given us all a jobs of one sort or another as Christians. We are supposed to walk worthy of this vocation we've been given. It takes denying myself and controlling how I react to others. But I hope God would one day call me worthy of anything he could offer me. 2. V. 19-24 I sometimes give myself away to my own lasciviousness, uncleanness, and greediness. I didn't learn these things from Christ but from my own conversation and life style. I must put off this self-born unrighteousness and put on the Christ-born righteousness. 3. V. 30 The Holy Spirit has sealed me and won't leave. But should I make it a pain for Him to dwell in the same body as so much sin? Never! I do what God hates. It's as simple as that. It grieves Him and it should grieve me just as badly.
Ephesians 4 1. V. 12 God has also given us Christians a spiritual gift. Knowing what that is and using it for the the glory of God and edifying of the church is our calling. 2. V. 14 roller coaster ride... God didn't design life to be that way. Though circumstances may go that way, we should not be driven around. We should not be distracted by new doctrines and deceiving people. Stay true to the word 3. V. 27 neither give place to the devil. The devil is bound from in dwelling a believer but he can still work within him. We often give the devil a green light signal in our life. We should not allow the devil to have his way in any area
