Today's passage: Philippians 1

  1. V20 This is probably one of the hardest characteristics to have as a Christian, and that is to be completely and totally unashamed of the Lord Jesus Christ and what he's done for us. I struggle with this a lot in my life. But really, what's there to be ashamed about? He saved us from an eternity in hell, he gave us an eternity to look forward to in heaven, he gave us freedom from the bondage of sin and yet we still manage to be ashamed of him. I think that's so selfish. I sometimes get worried about what people would think of me if they knew I was a Christian. But what's the worst they can actually do? Make fun of me? Beat me up? That just gives me treasures in heaven. What if they take it to extremes and kill me. I get to spend an eternity with Christ in heaven. So why are we ashamed? And on their side, we might be the only Christian they ever meet. The closest thing to knowing Jesus as their personal savior. So if we never show Christ in our lives, they might never get saved and go to hell. But, if we show Christ to them, or at least make him evident in our lives, they might become Christians, go to drive third world country and show Christ to millions of people, and that all started with us not being ashamed of the Lord and showing him to that person. That's what I would want to have happen.
V21 Being able to have to people say you lived your life for Christ is probably one of the best possible human achievements you could ever have. If we live for Christ, people will take notice. They will see Christ in us. As Christians, Christ's light shines through us. People should know that there's something different about us. And if we live for him, that's the best way to spend your life. And if we die in him, we spend an eternity with him in heaven.
V23-24 Here we can see how Paul had the desire for Christ to take him to be with him. However, he knew that there was still a need for him to stay on the earth to serve Christ. We should all be looking forward to the day when Christ comes back and takes up his children. Personally, I can't wait. But until then, we need to faithfully preparing ourselves for his return, and spreading the good news to others.

  2. Philippians 1
    1. V. 12 the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel. Wow. Paul was selfless enough to realize this. And he gladly accepted it. I wanna be like that
    2. V. 20 Paul's purpose in life was to magnify Christ. That is also our purpose. Let's represent Christ and show off what his power can do
    3. V. 21 all about Christ. If he lived he wanted it to be Christ in him. If he died, he knew he would be with Christ in heaven. Our life should just be Christ. Run by Christ, lived for Christ, and magnified by Christ

  4. v1: I love that Paul started this letter with humility before the Lord. He said in verse one that he and Timotheus were servants of the Lord...slaves. They were there to defend the gospel (v17) and lay down their lives for the Lord (v 21).

v20-21: Death, to a carnal man, is a complete loss. He loses all earthly possessions that he cherishes. When a Christian dies, they inherit more than anything this world can offer. Death should not scare us, but encourage us to do more for Christ while we are here on earth. In the end, we will gain something priceless...

v29: This verse is definitely thought provoking. If it came down to a life or death situation, would I really be willing to suffer for Christ? My immediate response is yes, but really thinking about makes me question what I would really do if placed in that situation. If I believe on His name, shouldn't I be willing to suffer for His name?

  5. If anyone is wondering why I usually post my stuff on the next morning, it's because I usually do my devos at night and my Wi-Fi at my house shuts off at 11 and it's too late to post it.

    1. V. 12-14 The only reason Paul was on prison was to further spread the gospel. Without being a prisoner, he wouldn't be allowed to see the king or enter a palace! The other benefit of his chains was that his bravery and willingness made others more willing to stand persecution.
    2. I could choose to live for my flesh. It seems very tempting at times. In v.23 Paul had the same feeling of being split between living for himself or living for God. But Paul states from experience that Christ is FAR BETTER!
    3. He calls the Philippians to stand strong, not be terrified by enemies, and to suffer. How lame is it that I'm scared of something as stupid as what someone might think about me. What a dumb excuse not to share the gospel. Also to be scared of how they would react is dumb because if worst came to worst and i got punched in the face it wouldn't be half as bad as what they did to Paul.

  6. V6: He which has begun a good work in me WILL be faithful to complete it. God is in control. I need to repeat this sometimes to myself over and over!

V9: God is my record. It stood out to me how many times Paul would say how God knew his heart, his desire for the fellow believers, his labor, his suffering etc... Comforting to know that God is our record. He knows it all.
V18: As long as the gospel was being spread, Paul was happy. He never strayed from that as the goal.

  7. 1. V 12-17 Through the afflictions and suffering he went through for the gospel, Paul realized that God was using his pain to further the gospel. Most would be discouraged and depressed, but he knew that God was working through his suffering.
    2. V 20 The boldness Paul displayed was awesome. He said he wasn't at all ashamed of the gospel. Ultimately though, he wanted Christ to magnified in his life. Even if that meant death. Christ should have 1st place in my life, no matter what it may cost me.
    3. V 27 Live out the gospel. Strive together for gospel.
